St. Louis leaders agree to minimum wage hike

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The minimum wage in St. Louis will rise to $11 per hour by 2018 under a newly approved measure.

The bill approved Friday by St. Louis’ Board of Alderman and later signed by Mayor Francis Slay was a compromise. An original proposal sought to raise the minimum wage to $13 by 2020. Several cities have been increasing their minimum wage.

The vote on the contentious issue met an important deadline. In July, Missouri Democratic Governor Jay Nixon vetoed a bill that would have blocked cities from raising the minimum wage beyond the state’s $7.65 per hour minimum. Lawmakers could override Nixon’s veto during a special September session.

But a provision of the bill states that it doesn’t override local minimum wage ordinance requirements already in effect as of Friday.
