St. Louis Treasurer Launches GoFundMe Drive to Remove Confederate Statue

ST. LOUIS (KTRS) St. Louis City Treasurer Tishaura Jones has launched an online fundraising drive to help finance the removal of the Confederate monument in Forest park. In its first two hours since its launch, donors have committed more than $1,000 toward its $25,000 goal. A big part of plans by St. Louis city officials to remove the Confederate monument  is how much it will cost. The monument itself, erected in 1914, weighs several tons and estimates to remove it have run into the six figures.

Mayor Lyda Krewson wants the 32-foot-tall monument in Forest Park removed as quickly as possible, and is looking into engineering options to take it down. It will likely be placed in storage since previous efforts to find a museum to house it have been unsuccessful. Mayor Krewson tried to rename the name of the street where the monument is located – Confederate Drive – when she was an alderman but her effort was unsuccessful.
