State lawmaker loses bid for Franklin County office

WASHINGTON, Mo. (AP) – A Republican state lawmaker from eastern Missouri who hoped to extend his political career on the local level has lost a four-candidate primary for Franklin County recorder of deeds.

Brian Nieves of Washington spent eight years in the state House and the past four years in the Missouri Senate but lost his bid for Franklin County Recorder of Deeds to Jennifer Metcalf of Union in a four-candidate Republican primary on Tuesday. Metcalf works in the recorder’s office.

Nieves initially filed for re-election to the state Senate but dropped out of that race. He told supporters on Facebook that he plans to support Metcalf in the November general election against Washington Democrat Judy Carroll.
