ST. LOUIS (AP) — A suburban St. Louis man has been sentenced to three years and six months in prison for lying about getting a large inheritance to scam lenders.

The Post-Dispatch says that 54-year-old Dana Jefferson of O’Fallon was sentenced Friday in federal court for four felony counts of wire fraud.

Prosecutors said Jefferson told prospective lenders that his father left him between $5 million and $200 million. Jefferson said the money was tied up and promised to pay extra on loans or buy lenders things, such as houses, once he got the inheritance.

Nine people agreed to lend Jefferson a total of $740,000. Some also offered him a place to stay in their homes.
