Suspect Takes Own Life After Confrontation with Velda City Police

ST. LOUIS (KTRS) St. Louis County police report a suspect involved in a shooting with a Velda City police officer is dead after he shot himself following a police chase. Police say a Velda City police officer answered a call about a domestic disturbance call in the 2200 block of Lucas & Hunt Road. When the first officer arrived on scene, he saw he suspect was hiding something behind his leg. The officer directed the suspect to drop the item. The suspect raised his hand, revealing a firearm, and the suspect and the officer shot at each other. The suspect’s gunfire struck the officer in his police belt and grazed his upper leg. The suspect fled and officers tracked him down to a garbage container in the 6900 block of Normandale Drive. Officers surrounded the container. As they lifted the lid, the suspect sitting inside. He held a handgun to his head and shot himself. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer who was shot was taken to a local hospital and treated for a minor injury.
The suspect is identified as 18-year-old Sam Thompson of the 2200 block of Lucas & Hunt Road.
