JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tensions between some GOP lawmakers and Missouri’s Democratic governor over spending limits have continued despite new legislative budget powers.

Frustrations again came to a head this week when Republican House Budget Committee Chairman Tom Flanigan wrote to Governor Jay Nixon criticizing him for blocking about $46 million in spending.

The Republican-controlled Legislature and Nixon have sparred for years over the governor’s power to restrict funding.

A new constitutional amendment was seen by some lawmakers as a potential solution because it gave the Legislature the power to undo Nixon’s budget actions.

But Nixon has continued to make cuts to some lawmakers’ dismay, saying revenue shortfalls make restrictions necessary.

Flanigan said he’s unsure whether lawmakers will try to undo any of Nixon’s recent spending cuts during the session that starts in January.
