Jefferson City, MO (KTRS)  This week is designated as Missouri Summer Weather Safety Week.

This has the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, the State Emergency Management Agency, and the National Weather Service are joining together to remind the public about the dangers with excessive heat.

It’s recommended to check on elderly relatives, friends, and neighbors during extreme heat. You should also drink plenty of water and limit intake of alcoholic beverages and to avoid strenuous work during the warmest part of the day. Use the buddy system when working in extreme temperatures and take frequent breaks.

Most importantly, you should never leave children or pets in a vehicle. Temperatures can heat up to dangerous levels within minutes.

Information about cooling centers in Missouri is available online at www.mo.gov. Last year, Missouri had eighteen heat related deaths.
