FERGUSON, Mo. (KTRS) – State and local officials are using “National Transportation Infrastructure Day” to promote their services while pleading for additional funding.

At a news conference Thursday, Metro President and CEO John Nations called for additional transportation spending at both the state and federal level in what he calls 21st Century solutions to 21st Century challenges.

“It is time for the federal government in Washington to make a long term commitment to transportation and its critical infrastructure which can in many ways hold the key to economic prosperity and opportunity,” Nations said. “The lack of a long-term transportation and infrastructure plan at the federal level imperils our ability to plan for the long-term needs of our region and imperils current and future opportunities.”

Officials touted the importance of the new North County Transit Center in Ferguson as an example of how the federal government is making a difference at the local level.

“There would not be a $5.5 million North County Transit Center under construction without the support of federal funding,” said Nations.

According to Metro, $4.3 million came from the Federal Transit Administration for the new transit hub, which is expected to open at the beginning of 2016.
