Trump and Carson’s attacks on Muslims worry some Republicans

WASHINGTON (AP) – The candidates atop the GOP presidential field are ramping up political attacks aimed at Muslims in a move designed to appeal to hardline conservatives.

But the strategy worries party elders who fear escalating anti-immigrant rhetoric could cost Republicans the White House in 2016.

The aggressive words come in particular from leading candidates Donald Trump and Ben Carson.

Trump has vowed to deport any Syrian refugee taken in by the U.S. Most are likely to be Muslim. Trump warns they could be Islamic State militants.

Carson has launched an effort to take away the nation’s largest Muslim advocacy group’s tax-exempt status.

Among those worried is Mitt Romney. He says one of the lessons from his failed 2012 campaign is that Republicans must do a better job at connecting with minority voters.
