CHICAGO (AP) – The largest union representing the Chicago Police Department is pushing back against its new uniform policy for on-duty officers.

The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 filed an unfair labor practice complaint Tuesday with the Illinois Labor Relations Board. The union says the police department should have negotiated the changes before making an announcement, because “the dress code policy is a mandatory subject of bargaining.”

As of Friday, police officers will be required to cover up any tattoos and prohibited from wearing baseball hats. The department says it took the action “to promote uniformity and professionalism.”

Some officers also have voiced opposition over the new policy, saying their tattoos are part of their identities.

Police departments in other major cities have implemented similar changes to their uniform policies.
