COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) – The University of Missouri has received a $25 million donation to launch an institute to study constitutional democracy.

The university said Thursday that Richard Kinder, co-founder of the Kinder Morgan, Inc. pipeline energy company, made the $25 million gift through his family foundation. The gift will launch and support the Kinder Institute on Constitutional Democracy.

The Kansas City Star reports the gift is the third largest gift to the university. Kinder says the money’s intended to make the university a leader in studying political thought and history.

Kinder, a native of Cape Girardeau, graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the university in 1966 and a law degree in 1968.

Justin Dyer, director of the new institute, says the money will enable the recruitment of top leaders and graduate students.
