Weekend oil spill on Mississippi River

A minor petroleum spill on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River is not expected to pose a hazard to wildlife or river traffic.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the incident happened about 9 a.m. Sunday off the site of National Maintenance and Repair, a barge and vessel service center in Hartford, Illinois.  That’s just north of the confluence.

Containment booms were put in place to contain the spill.  U.S. Coast Guard Lieutenant Tim Marriott tells the paper that they expect the natural process to “take care of whatever escapes at this point.”

The St. Louis City Fire Department assisted in the clean-up.
