Wellston Police Department Dissolved

Wellston, MO (KTRS)  There’s a major change in police service for the City of Wellston.

This comes after the Wellston City Council voted during a closed door meeting Monday night to disband it’s police department and enter into a police co-op with Vinita Park, in an effort to save money.

Wellston Mayor Nathaniel Griffin addressed this decision during a Tuesday afternoon news conference, calling it a positive change.  “This decision is the best decision to me for the City of Wellston, not only for the employees, the citizens, but for the business owners. We all benefit out of this decision. We have more manpower now. Manpower has been a issue for the City of Wellston for the last few months. Now we have more than enough manpower.”

Griffin denied that this decision was based on a personal agenda.

Vinita Park Police Chief Tim Swope was also there to outline his plans for providing police service to Wellston. “ We have minimal manpower levels set not only for Vinita Park, but also for Wellston. We’re meeting those minimal manpower levels. We’re also going to be performing hot spot policing for areas of Wellston that have been notorious for creating some issues and we’re going to be on top of those.”

City officials say Wellston police officers have the opportunity to apply for openings with the North County Co-Op.
