Local activists are urging Governor Nixon to declare a State of Emergency.

The non-profit organization “Just Moms STL” delivered 11,500 petitions requesting a Declaration of Emergency in response to the radioactive West Lake Landfill in Bridgeton, Mo. Co-founder of the organization Karen Nickel said she believes those living within a half-mile of the landfill should be allowed to have a permanent relocation plan.

“We also believe that we as a community we deserve to have a fair market property value assurance plan in place,” Nickel said.

Another leading concern involves the federal handling of the clean-up site. The Environmental Protection Agency is currently responsible for the West Lake Landfill, but Nickel said the EPA’s remediation process involves too many parties making it inefficient.

Protestors are requesting that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (FUSRAP) take over.

“They come in, and they follow the radioactive waste. They clean up,” Nickel said. “They do what they need to do, and they basically tell the responsible parties this is what it costs, this is what you owe.”
