CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) – River walk trail extensions and floodwall improvements are among the projects planned for the riverfront in downtown Cape Girardeau.

The Southeast Missourian reports that a federal grant is covering the project’s costs. The winning bid was for just more than $800,000.

As part of the work, an existing trail will be extended about 300 feet north to a boat ramp, with a 10-foot-wide pedestrian bridge built to provide a crossing over Sloan’s Creek. To the south, workers will add about 1,600 feet of trail along the city’s floodwall on the riverside, ending behind the Southeast Missouri State University River Campus.

While construction of the river walk extension will begin this year, it could take longer before work on floodwall projects begin.
