Working Group Of Ferguson Commission Discusses Economic Mobility

St. Louis, MO (KTRS)  Improving economic mobility within the St. Louis area is one of the issues being addressed by the Ferguson Commission. That was the focus of the Working Group meeting Wednesday afternoon in Wellston.

Several barriers to economic mobility were discussed such as access to capital, transportation, and education.

Patrick Adams, the CEO of St. Louis Community Credit Development, says it was surprising to learn how transportation plays such a significant role when it comes to economic success.  He explained what could be done to resolve this problem.  “If there’s a community development financial institution, they have access to U.S. Treasury monies, which could be deployed into the community in the form in some sort of automobile loan program, something like that that bypassed the current problems associated with mass transit and get people into their own cars. If we get you into your own car, you get a better job.”

Lara Granich, the director of Missouri Jobs With Justice, explains how the cost of pursing higher education creates an obstacle. “Higher education is the number one indicator of being able to progress in the economy and get a good paying job and do better than the better than the generation before you, but higher education has become very unaffordable to low-income and working class families in our community.”

The meeting of the full Ferguson Commission is scheduled for March 25th at the Sheet Metal’s Workers Hall in St. Louis.
