GODFREY, IL (KTRS) It’s almost summer – and officials in Illinois confirm the West Nile Virus is back as well. Illinois Public Health Director Doctor Nirav Shah says the mosquitoes were found this past week in Godfrey, Illinois – not far from St. Louis, and he points out we can expect to find West Nile mosquitoes in Missouri soon as well.

No human cases of West Nile virus have been reported so far this year.

Dr. Shah says education and prevention are important to fighting the spread of West Nile. This includes wearing insect repellant when going outside and getting rid of standing water around your home or business. West Nile is rarely fatal, though people older than 50 or with weak immune systems are at a higher risk than the rest of the population.

The mosquito that carries West Nile is not the same as the mosquito that carries the Zika virus. Dr. Shah says Zika mosquitoes are not common to the Midwest.
