Tampa Bay, FL – Saint Louis FC earned a point against the Tampa Bay Rowdies with a 1-1 final in front of 6,068 at Al Lang Stadium.
Saint Louis FC took the lead in a highly physical affair when Jose Angulo buried a free kick from about 25-yards out in the 59th minute. Tampa Bay earned the equalizer from Neill Collin’s powerful header in the 87th minute to remain second in the Eastern Conference. The result moves STLFC to 12 points on the season and ninth in the Eastern Conference as they return home for the June 2nd game against Toronto FC II.
The first half saw Saint Louis FC unable to register a shot as they conceded more possession in a rare occasion this season. Tampa Bay provided most of the action with seven shots that forced STLFC goalkeeper Adam Grinwis into a number of saves. The best opportunities for Tampa Bay arose from set piece situations as they had six corners in the first half. Yellow card cautions also dominated the first half with each team picking up two in a physical encounter. Wes Charpie was booked for a foul in the 12th minute and the resulting free kick from Joe Cole was tipped over the bar by Grinwis from 30 yards out. The next best opportunity for Tampa Bay came at the end of the first half as Michael Nanchoff missed a 25-yard free kick wide right.
The second half continued the physical battle as STLFC’s Konrad Plewa and Tampa Bay’s Darnell King picked up yellow cards within minutes of each other. A foul on Christian Voleksy setup the free kick from 25-yards out for Angulo, who bent the shot over the defensive wall and left Tampa Bay goalkeeper Matt Pickens watching as the ball found the back of the net. STLFC came close to doubling their advantage as substitute Tyler David found acres of space, but his shot was well-saved by Pickens in the 85th minute. Tampa Bay would then find the equalizer in the 87th minute as Neill Collins powered his header over Grinwis for his first goal of the season.
